019 foto di castel sant'angelo

I have about 80 photos sitting on my hard drive now, so I'll try to upload a few interesting ones each day. First, here my two furriest roommates (che bellìsimi):

And from last weekend, here are a few of the photos I took at Castel Sant'Angelo. First, a view of San Pietro through one of the thick medieval walls:

And here's a view from Castel Sant'Angelo looking southeast over the Tiber River. Giancolo (Janiculum Hill) is in the background. Note how the Tiber is located below street level in the city. I'm not sure about the history of the roads and buildings right at the riverside, but in general, street level in Rome has risen about 20 feet since ancient times. This is why in ancient times, you had to walk up many stairs in order to get to the Pantheon, but today it's right at street level. Anyway - you can walk along the Tevere at the street level, or down at the water level, which is very quiet and peaceful.

This is the loggia designed by Bramante in the upper level of the castel on the west side. This is the part of the building where the Popes lived.

Interesting about the Tiber being below street level. I thought that was quite common everywhere buy in Venice.
