046 italia vince germania!

(above: Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere)

Mondiale: Last night was so exciting! Italy and Germany were scoreless through regulation time. The first overtime period yielded no score. The second overtime was almost over, when Italy scored two goals in the last minute of overtime. The city went wild, screaming and shouting and horns honking all over town. I was going to go to the Centro to try to get some photos but due to the overtime, it already was well after midnight, so I decided not to go out. I'm counting on Italy beating France or Portugal in the final next Sunday, and I promise to go get photos then. :)

(above: detail from S. Maria in Trastevere.) It's such a pleasant change to see women depicted rather than always men - this is the only place in Rome I've seen like this. This is also one of the oldest mosaics - really makes you wonder what happened in civilization over the last 1500 years.
